I received a date that I will be returning to work. It is Feb 28TH. It will be slow at first so I can get back into the loop of everything. The DR wants me to start slowly and increase the hours after a couple weeks. I am so excited to go back to work and see all the wonderful people I worked with.

Nuero Phych Exam

I passed the exam. The Doctors said I did excellent on the test. Awesome I am so happy.

I did my second Nuero Phych exam and it takes about two weeks to get the results. Personally I felt really positive and not overwhelmed coming out o this one. So I will just be patient and see what the results are when they come in. The therapist that gave the exam to me said that I did better then most of the patients that she has given this to. So I will keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best.This may be the last exam that I have to take before I go back to work.Take care everyone and I hope the new year is treating everyone well.

Nuero Phych Evaluation Is approved

I received a date and approval for my Nuero Phych evaluation. It will be done at Casa Colina's Nuero Phych dept. It will be done on Jan 4th of 2011. Which is coming up really quick. So I will keep my fingers crossed to see how this one goes. I will let everyone know what the results are when I get them.HAPPY NEW YEARS . I hope everyone had a great Christmas.

No approval yet for my second Nuero Phych Exam

There is no approval for my 2Nd Nuero Phych exam ,but it is in the process of being approved, that is what we have been told. I hope it comes quick because that is what will let me go back to work at my wonderful job. So I am still improving every week that goes by . My family is telling me I have my old look back. This is the look of knowing what is happening around me. A couple months ago they told me I had a look on my face like I was trying to figure something out. Even though it was just a normal conversation,nothing new to me. What I was told by my last therapist was it was my brain getting back to thinking normal not having to process everything that I came across with a thought. Now it just getting the information and not over analyzing it like it is a huge complex math problem.Things are still progressing in the right directions.On another note I had a great Thanksgiving with my family and now I have to start shopping for everyone for Christmas. Oh my wife is so excited ,she loves to get online deals on things that are a lot more expensive at the store. So I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and is getting ready for Christmas. Nuero Psychological exam

Hello everyone, I hope everyone is well that is still following my Blog. Sorry I didn't get to update yesterday but I have been extremely busy this last week with a wedding and DR Appointment. I did receive some good news. My next step is a Nuero Psychological exam. This is basically and exam that tests how I process things through my brain.I did one a while ago when I was not doing to good. So what they will do is compare this next one to my last one and see how far I have come.It should be a huge improvement from the last one. My family told me that I was not doing to great at the time of the last one. So I will keep up my volunteering and school and hopefully that will improve this next exam.Take care everyone and if there are any questions please post them if you have time.

Hello everyone ,I am so sorry it has been a while since my last update. I have been so busy with school at Mount Sac ,Volunteering at Arcadia Methodist Hospital and my brother Darren just got married to a wonderfull woman who will be an awesome wife. I was one of the best Men in the wedding. So I had to do the best man toast in front of about 150 people.I was a little nervous but I was OK because in theraphy I had a Presentation class where I learned how to speak in front of a group of other Patients about something that was new to me without notes in front of me. It had to be all by memory. Thank you Larry, that was the name of the therapist in that class.In addition to that I passed my first class at Mount Sac. I also went back to my work so the therapist could see what my work enviroment was again to see if there was anything they needed to do with me.Thank you everyone for following and if there are any questions please post them. I will be updating my Blog every Sunday now. I think I can attempt to do that with good success.

Hello everyone . How is everybody enjoying the heat?Everyone try to stay cool and drink tons of fluid( Not Beer) lol.I know it has been a while since I posted anything. The reason is I am in the stage right now where the therapists want me to get back into work mode. So I am staying busy everyday like I was back at work.Things are good with that. I am going back to school still volunteering and doing other brain exercises daily.I am doing them by myself which is a step I needed to take . I am tired at the end of the day but slowly and surely a little less tired as the weeks pass by.I got use to doing things with others. It was just the mode my brain learned how to function in. So I realized before my injury that was not the way I did things. So I decided to be more independent and I am getting better. If there are any questions please send them my way.

PARAMEDIC LICENSE

Hello everyone . I hope all is well with everyone . I HAVE GREAT NEWS,I received my new paramedic card in the mail. This is one of the things they said I would not be able to achieve.Life is going extremely well and great with my recovery from the injury. I am doing what they call HOME THERAPY now. This is where the staff comes to my house for my treatments , It is awesome.It is about 6 hours a week,2 hours a day 3 times a week.This weekend we celebrated Maddy's 12th birthday party. I was very happy to be home this year for it.Maddy was very happy also that I was home. Sorry for the delay in getting information to everyone. I will be updating at least once a week or when important inforation comes to my attention. Thank you to everyone that is staying posted to my blog.Everyone have a great week. Feel free to ask any question you may have. I will answer anything I am able to.

YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. I had a great birthday yesterday,but man I am getting old LMAO.I am so glad I can remember this one . My beautiful wife and family did an awesome job with everything.My wife and I had dinner at Ruth Chris steak house and it was great.My awesome mother was waiting for me when we got home from dinner. What a great day. They are also planning another dinner with friends and family on Saturday.

My 36th Birthday

This is crazy that I am turning 36 when I pretty much don't remember my 35Th year. This is still great because I am able to be here sharing it with everyone. This year is going to be great, please stay tuned for all my updates. Now that I am doing better ,I will post as much as I can. Hello everyone. This is Keith ,I am doing alot better now. I can drive now and my short term memory has improved tremendously.I wanted to update everyone on anything new that has come about. I also just sent off my continuing education info for my paramedic license renewal . These are 2 things that they told me I would never be able to do with my injury.I know it has been a while since any updates but I thought these were some good ones to share with everyone.There is one more to update now. I am now on home therapy. This is where the therapist come to my house for treatment. If anyone has questions feel free to post them. Thank you for all the thoughts and prayers this past year.

Keith is doing much better these days! He keeps improving with his short term memory each and everyday! He is very relaxed now that he is at home. I am so amazed how far he has come in such a short period of time! It truly is a miracle!!!! GOD IS GREAT!!!!
Last weekend we all had lunch at Wendy's house with his uncle Jack who he hasn't seen in 10 years. It was Darren, Atria, Kyle, Wendy, Jack, Bill, Keith and I. Keith had a great time catching up with his uncle. On Sunday Keith and I went to go see A Time Travelers Wife. This weekend was a nice relaxing weekend. We had family over on Saturday and on Sunday Keith and I went down to Huntington Beach to visit my uncles. The weather was fantastic! Keith still continues to go to Day therapy Monday Thur Friday at Casa Colina. Thank you all for your continued support and prayers! I truly appreciate everything everyone has done for me and my family through these difficult times. THANK YOU!!!!

Last Night was a FUN and GOOD night! Today is a GREAT day for Keith!

Last night, a group of us from Bowers and Pacific Ambulance (Paul, Danny, Nino, Ed N., Juan, Pedro, Lucian, Jonathan) had dinner at Pinnacle Peak (Steakhouse) in San Dimas with Keith, Jenny, Darren, Darren’s fiancé Autria and Keith’s mom Wendy. It was a fun and enjoyable night! Keith looked good, sounded good and is recovering nicely.

Good news for Keith: Today at 10:00 a.m. Jenny was able to check Keith out from being an INPATIENT to now being an OUTPATIENT. Keith will now be able to sleep in his own bed in his own home each night and will be picked up and returned by a facility van during the week so he can continue with his therapy and rehabilitation process.

Short term memory: Getting Better! Keith still has a bit of journey towards full recovery! Please continue to pray for Keith!

UPDATE- Sunday, August 8th

Keith was able to spend the weekend at home with Jenny. On Saturday, they went to the movies and saw “The Ugly Truth”. Jenny says Keith is a bit agitated and does not want to go back to the rehabilitation center tomorrow. We all know the importance of Keith’s continued therapy as a crucial element towards continued recovery and improving his short term memory.

While Keith continues to make progress, there is still more healing that needs to occur through continued therapy! Please continue to pray for Keith and his family.

UPDATE....the FIRST in quite some time!!!

IT has been a long time since this blog has been updated. I apologize for not keeping this updated more regularly, but there hasn’t been a ton to report. I told Jenny that I would update tonight and will make sure we provide weekly updates at a minimum.

Tonight Danny and I spent some time with Keith. Present were his mom Wendy, Jenny and his brother Darren. KEITH LOOKS GREAT! This last weekend he was able to spend the two nights at home with Jenny. This is the first time Keith has slept anywhere other than a medical facility since his accident in April. He continues to progress daily. The medical professionals have focused on improving his short term memory were he continues to make progress. While we visited, he also had a phone conversation with Ray Iskander. He remembers all facets of his job and didn’t miss a beat when we talked about work and the people that we associate with professionally through work. He definitely remembers people from the past and has retained his paramedic skills knowledge.

The recovery has truly been remarkable. GOD has truly shown us a miracle in the progress we have seen in Keith. The Neurosurgeon that saw Keith from the Emergency Room to Surgery and is now monitoring his progress has said that what Keith's recovery is a miracle. The Neurosurgeon initially thought that Keith would not be able to ever walk again or talk again! We are all amazed at what we are seeing.

This next week, a group of us (with Jenny present and with her blessing) are taking Keith on a “field trip” and out to dinner! We look forward to this time with Keith away from the hospital.

I visited Keith on Friday and spent some time talking to Jenny on the phone and talked to Keith’s mom Wendy as well. Both were attempting to adjust Keith’s plan to let him go home at night and just bring him back in the mornings for his therapy. They hope to get an answer this week. While Keith is making progress, he gets very agitated about having to stay overnight at the facility. He knew who I was the second he saw me and asked about various people in our organization (Brian, Ray, Danny, Nino). While he does extremely well remembering certain things, there are still challenges with his short term memory. Please continue to pray that the therapy will help in this area and that Keith will continue to experience improvement.

This weekend Keith spent a good portion of his days with his brother Darren and also went out with family for dinner.

Hello all. I know it has been awhile since this blog was updated. I got an update today from Keith’s brother Darren. Here is what I know:

Keith is doing well and I am sure he continues to make progress in his recovery! He’s been doing his therapy from 9:00 to 3:00 Monday thru Friday and 9:00 to 12:00 on Saturdays. He still gets confused on occasion and just wants to go home. He gets agitated when it is explained to him that he can not be taken home during the week. Who can blame him!

On July 4^th, Jenny was able to take him out for about 5 hours. They spent a few hours at home then went to visit a friend before taking him back to Casa Colina. On Sunday my Mom, Jenny, and Maddy were able to take Keith back home for a couple of hours where they played monopoly and spent some quality time together.

I will continue to update you as I get more information.

Transport- NEW FACILITY

Keith was transported without incident yesterday to his new facility. Keith continues to have challenges with his short term memory and his new facility and intense therapy should help!

Doctor's Appointment, June 23

Keith was transported by ambulance to see his doctor yesterday. Everything went well at the doctor's where they removed all of the staples from his head and abdomen. He needs to keep his head dry until later today when he'll be able to shower. He developed a rash on his head but he can't use the cream for that until later today as well.

Staff at his facility shared that Keith has been working very hard on his short term memory everyday and he's beginning to regain some things. All in all he seems to continue to make progress. On Friday, Keith will be transferred to Casa Colina (REHAB CENTER) in Pomona for more intense rehab. Visiting hours during the week will be after 3 p.m., after 12 p.m. on Saturday’s and all day on Sunday’s.

Update, Friday June 19th

I got an update from Jenny today on Keith. On Wednesday, Keith attended the graduation of his nephew Kyle. Afterwards he went to his mom’s house for cake and ice cream. Keith was able to hang out with family and friends for about four hours. Keith continues therapy, is working on his short term memory and still in need of continued prayer as he recovers.

Post Surgery Update- Thursday June 11th

Surgery went well for Keith today. I expected to find a disoriented and heavily medicated patient when I walked into Keith’s ICU room today. Mom was in the waiting room and said that Keith was talking and doing well. When I walked into his room, he immediately acknowledged me, was joking (with Maddy and Jenny by his side), and really just wanted to get up and leave. He said he felt good but said that when he was given the “MS” (Morphine) that it felt really good. He said he is happy that the dent in his head is gone and that he no longer has the “flat spot”. He was looking forward to the Lakers game, told me he wanted a steak, and was in excellent spirits.

Keith was scheduled to get a MRI done tonight but I have not heard back on those results. I will update this blog as more information becomes available.

SURGERY TOMORROW

I just talked to Keith on the phone. He recognized my voice and knew who I was. Man is he funny! He was cracking jokes and making comparisons to how he looked like Dolly Parton. We talked about picking him up in the wee hours of the morning to take him to his surgery appointment. Although confused about a few of the things we talked about, he was cheerful, talkative and ready for his transport and surgery tomorrow.

Tuesday- Surgery in just over 32 hours

Keith was visited by Lucian (Bowers) yesterday and looked good. We got word today on arranging Keith’s transport to St. Mary’s on Thursday. He is scheduled for surgery at 7:00 a.m. Jenny has taken Thursday and Friday off so she can be with Keith as he recovers.

I will update this blog after Keith’s surgery and let everyone know how he is doing. Although fairly routine and the replacement of his skull bone has been a long awaited event, Keith will experience some discomfort after the surgery. Please pray for Keith and for quick healing after his surgery.

Thursday, June 4th

Yesterday Keith was visited by Bowers and Pacific Management (Nino and Ed N.). Keith was doing good, had just finished physical therapy and was walking in the hallway. Keith wanted to leave when both Nino and Ed went to leave and Jenny says each day he tells Jenny he wants to leave with her (I don’t blame him. Poor guy has been in the hospital for nearly 7-weeks). He was also visited by Lucian this morning. Keith is talking and making progress.

Keith is eating solid food and his g-tube was removed. He can write and read and is writing things down to assist with improving his short term memory. He will be having surgery on June 11^th at St. Mary’s to replace the piece of skull back into / onto his head. I am sure he will have a bit of discomfort (opening his belly up to retrieve the bone to replace back onto his head) for a few days following the surgery. He will likely remain at St. Mary’s for 2-3 days for recovery.

Keith transported to his new facility

GREAT NEWS!!!

Today we transported Keith by ambulance to Arcadia Methodist Hospital Acute Rehab Center where he will be hospitalized for the next step in his rehabilitation process. When we arrived to pick up Keith, he was sitting in a wheelchair receiving his breathing treatment. When he saw us he immediately acknowledged each of us by name (Me, Danny, Pedro and Jonathan). Keith was joking and in excellent spirits. I called Ray and Brian individually so they could both talk to Keith. They were both excited to talk to him and overwhelmed with excitement to hear him speak, answer questions and just to listen to Keith’s enthusiasm. While there may have been a few “doubters” who the validity of the progress on Keith as reported on this blog, family and friends have supported this blog and its accuracy. More importantly, family and friends are truly excited to see Keith come from a severely critical condition to the amazing progress we are seeing just 6-weeks later. Today we are all thankful for what God has done in healing Keith.

Keith looks great (although he commented to Jenny after looking in the mirror about how his head looked “funky” since there is the slight indentation where the piece of skull needs to be replaced…which we joked about with him as well and he commented about needing to wear a hat), sounds great, is talkative, funny, remembers everyone from work, and it was just AWESOME to see how far he has come. We talked about him getting out of the hospital soon so we could make a run to play some Blackjack where he responded “I am up for that”. Keith was able to walk on his own today and does so with no assistance. He is eating and continues to make progress. His long term memory is great although he does get a bit confused on some of the sort term memory items. Continued therapy and rehabilitation should help in this area.

We were ALL ecstatic, joyful and overcome with a variety of emotions to see or hear the amazing “positive” changes in Keith. We are thankful for all the support and today Keith told me how thankful he is for everything. I know the family is very thankful as well. There has been tremendous support from family, friends, co-workers, acquaintances and even our vendors. On behalf of the family and Keith’s extended family at Bowers Ambulance, THANK YOU for your continued support and for continuing to pray for Keith’s healing.

Update- Friday Visit

On Friday, Keith was visited by a few Managers and Directors from Bowers. Keith was joking, eating on his own, and in good spirits. Although he does get a bit confused at times, he continues to progress nicely.

Tuesday, May 26th- DOCTOR VISIT

Nothing but good news! First, Jenny reported that Keith walked without his walker yesterday. Wobbly at first, he did much better the 2^nd time he tried to walk. This was great news for Jenny.

Today we got more good news. We transported Keith by Ambulance to visit his neurosurgeon Dr. Duong. His doctor was amazed at Keith’s progress and said that Keith came from being near death, as Dr. Duong put it (he was extremely critical when he came into the Emergency Room), to where he is today and said that they got this one right or did something right! We are happy that Keith’s surgery is on Dr. Duong’s list of success stories. The doctor said Keith looked remarkable and while they would typically measure his skull to determine the amount of swelling, he said that there was no need to measure since he could visually see that the swelling was gone. Dr. Duong is scheduling Keith into surgery to have the piece of his skull reattached that has been stored in his stomach. At Jenny’s request (Jenny was at work), we took a picture of Keith off one of the cell phones to send to her. Keith stuck his tongue out at Jenny. Keith was talking, making jokes and was in excellent spirits!

We continue to thank God for Keith’s miraculous recovery!!!

Last Night, Thursday May 21st

I was accompanied tonight by Nino (Bowers I.T. Manager) and Danny (Bowers Operations and Communications Manager) in a visit to see Keith. Keith’s mom Wendy, Jenny as well as Jenny’s brother and other family members and friends were present as Keith talked on the phone (yes, talked on the phone) with Darren. After receiving a breathing treatment, we spent some time talking to Keith. Keith was very talkative and humorous. Sometimes hard to hear when he talks, Jenny told Keith “Use your big voice”. Keith smiled and responded with “whatever”. Although a bit confused at times, he is very animated and knows what is going on.

While trying to track the Lakers score on Nino’s phone (since it wasn’t on the TV in Keith’s room), Keith got on a roll. He said to tell Brian and Ray hi (owners for Bowers) and asked Nino if he had his phone. I told Keith that Danny had has phone. He then teased Nino (Nino is very busy and we all give him a hard time because his overwhelming duties often force him to push off projects for more urgent I.T. needs) that when he needs his phone repaired that it always takes Nino two weeks to fix things. Nino and the rest of us broke out laughing.

While turning to one side of the bed and looking at Jenny, I was on the opposite side and loudly said “Keith” at which point he loudly said “Hey Paul” with a smile. Holding a miniature replica Raiders Helmet, I asked Keith “What is this?” Keith took a hold of the helmet and said “What do you mean? This is nice” and made other “pro Raider” comments. I then asked him who Jenny’s team was and he said “Miami”. I reminded him that he called her team the “chickens” the other day instead of the Dolphins at which time he smiled and started to call them the chickens. I told him we missed him at work and that I am sure he is looking forward to getting out of the hospital and getting back to work. He smiled and said “not really” and said that he is on vacation and asked me if I got his vacation request. I told him “YES” and that I signed and approved his request.

I can go on and on! Keith watched “DIRTY JOBS” on TV while we all kept up on the Lakers score and spent quality time talking to Keith. There was so much that Keith said (much of which I am probably forgetting). Wee are truly seeing the miraculous power of our God through Keith’s amazing progress and healing. Keith had his I.V. removed, is eating some food, walking, talking and reading. He is still a bit confused at times which is understandable this soon in the game with such a significant brain injury. He looks great, swelling is down and although we know recovery will be long, we are all excited to see how far he has come. Next Wednesday is Keith and Jenny’s anniversary. Jenny is taking that day off from work so she can spend the day with Keith. KEEP PRAYING! It works and is working for Keith! As we left, Keith high fived, shook our hands or gave us up and down fists (hitting our fists together). He asked why I was leaving and I told him that it was almost 9:00 p.m. and that I hadn’t eaten yet...that all three of us guys hadn’t eaten yet. Keith then looked up at the clock and saw the time. It was good for all of us to see Keith and spend time with him. We assured him we would be back and we really didn’t want to leave. It is so exhilarating to see Keith go from ICU and on a ventilator in a coma to being talkative and funny.

Thursday EARLY a.m. - May 21st

Keith’s MRI came back normal. There is still some swelling, but that has gone down considerably in the last two weeks. (Wow, Kris won over Adam!). Although we tried to act like “manly men”, every year us guys at work would go out to lunch and talk about American Idol. I assume Keith was watching or listening tonight and if not, I am sure Jenny will fill him in on the details. We all miss Keith and are excited to see what God has in store for him. We accept that God has a plan and all things happen for a reason although we don’t always understand why. A few of us from work are planning a visit to Keith in the early evening. WOW WOW WOW!!!

I was in awe and stood in amazement in my visit with Keith today. Keith had me, Jenny and Darren rolling in laughter. Keith is animated and has made tremendous improvement. I am not sure where to begin and will probably leave a few things out, but let me share TODAY with you…

Keith was able to walk with a walker today and did well. When Jenny asked Keith if he was showing off, he said that he was. Off from work, Jenny was able to be present during Keith’s therapy (walking, etc.) today. Not only was he able to walk, but he was able to read and repeat numbers. Yesterday he had Darren’s cell phone and read the text message or missed call to Darren. Amazing!

When I first arrived early in the afternoon, Keith was sleeping. He woke up for less than a minute and then went back into a healthy “snoring” nap for about 20-minutes or so. When Keith woke up, he was really animated. He commented about coming back to work and was answering all my questions. Jenny said he wanted Keith to get better by September so they could watch football together. Knowing Keith is a Raider fan, I mentioned rooting on the Chargers and Keith responded saying “Forget the Chargers” with a smile on his face. Jenny asked Keith who HIS team was and Keith said “Raiders”. Jenny asked him who HER team was and he said “Chickens”. Jenny laughed and said “Dolphins” at which team Keith smiled and said “Dolphins”. I told him about his Dodgers and Manny Ramirez and he responded with either “really” or “wow” or something like that (I can’t remember because we were talking about so many different things). I mentioned our trips to “Curley’s” (a local burger joint in Long Beach that we frequent) and told him how a few of us finally ate at Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles in Long Beach. He smiled, acknowledged and commented on everything I talked to him about. When I pulled his blanket down to uncover his hands, he grabbed the blanket to cover himself back up while smiling and yelling “Hey” and something like “what are you doing?” I told him he was really snoring loud and when I said that I am sure Jenny snores too, Keith said that she does but not like he does…and said “I’m being honest”. When I told him I had a meeting to get to, he asked me “what meeting” and “what time”. I looked at my pager that had just gone off and told him that I am sure he doesn’t miss having his pager right now. He took a hold of my pager and started to scroll through or “read” the pages and then handed the pager back to me. THIS MAY ALL SOUND a bit boring, but just to see Keith react and talk and smile and just witnessing his sense of humor was very touching. Keith has really come a long way!

Keith did complain that his head was hurting and I explained that they gave him pain medication in his I.V. while he was sleeping. He asked if they gave him something to sleep and I explained NO, just medication for your headache. Keith was high fiving, smiling, teasing Jenny, and was in great spirits. He fingered Darren to get closer to him and told him several times to “get closer” and then pointed to his cheek at which time Darren asked if he wanted a kiss and then kissed Keith on the cheek. Keith smiled and said that he was waiting for that all day and then basically told Darren he was “dumb” for doing it. We all busted out laughing.

I know that I probably missed a lot of what happened today, but today was truly amazing. Here is what I do know. KEITH IS PROGRESSING NICELY! Darren and I both had a tear in our eye as we talked about that first night when we didn’t know if Keith would make it to where he is today. We thank GOD for his blessing in Keith’s life and the healing we continue to see! OH YEAH, Keith ate applesauce (he knew what it was and what it tasted like) and drank orange juice today. He can breathe on his own, walk, talk, eat, taste, swallow AND has a sense of humor. He is still healing and may have some deficits we are not aware of yet, but so far God has provided wonderful healing!

Please don’t forget to continue to pray for many more days of great news and for few to no roadblocks in Keith’s recovery. We know there are many hurdles to still overcome but we are thankful for what we are seeing up to this point!

Monday- May 18th: Update from Darren

Jenny was unable to make it to the hospital yesterday (Sunday) because she wasn’t feeling well so I wanted to give you a quick update on Keith. On Saturday night/Sunday morning he pulled his trach out (again). The Doctor decided to leave it out and have him monitored closely to see how his breathing and oxygen level would respond. Of course, being the fighter that Keith is, he passed the test and didn’t need the trach anymore.

Yesterday (Sunday), Keith had a really good day. When I walked in the room he smiled and said “What’s up brother!” My Mom, Jason, Devin (Jason wife) & Maddy were there spending time with him as well & he was alert and talking a lot. Later in the day, the Doctor visited him and asked how he was doing and Keith responded with “Good” and a high five. The doctor asked who was there visiting him and Keith said “My Mom, my Daughter…” The doctor told us that he feels Keith is ready to go to rehab and was starting to get the ball rolling on a transfer. Great News!

Saturday Afternoon Update- May 16th

We are at the one month mark from when Keith’s injury occurred. I talked to Jenny who was at work today. She says that they are still awaiting the results of the tests they ran yesterday. Darren was told that since tests happened later in the day yesterday, it may take a bit longer to get those results.

Jenny says Keith talks when he wants and to certain people. I am sure there are good days where Keith is more alert and days where Keith is fatigued or just trying to heal. When his mom Wendy walked into the room recently, he said “Hello Mother”. Jenny asked Keith why he keeps pulling his tubes and Keith said “I don’t know why baby”. While we are excited about his progress, we are concerned about the swelling and pray that it will subside and Keith will continue to show the progress he has shown up to this point.

Jenny indicated she is happy with what has been reported on this blog. The entire family has asked that we manage this blog and ensure it’s accuracy and integrity. This blog has helped to keep everyone in the loop on Keith’s progress. With 600 employees in the Bowers and Pacific Ambulance family as well as Keith’s immediate family and friends, we are hoping that this blog has provided you with the information you would like to hear on Keith. I receive daily phone calls from people who love Keith and are all praying for his recovery. On behalf of the Bowers family as well as the MacLellan family, your prayers and support are greatly appreciated.

Friday, May 15th

Today we had put plans into motion to transport Keith back to St. Mary’s Medical Center. Concerned about the swelling in his head that has not gone down as expected this week, Keith was going to be transported by Bowers to see his Neurosurgeon back at St. Mary’s. Those plans were scrapped today as the medical professionals changed directions and decided to run some more tests first. Poor Jenny was at work today while trying to juggle emotions and the updates she was receiving on Keith. She was understandably stressed over the planned transport but now we are all waiting for test results and pray that those tests will pan out to be positive or at least provide direction in what needs to be done next for Keith to ensure he continues to heal. I am thankful for the weekend where Jenny, Wendy, Jason and Darren can spend more time with Keith (instead of having to be at work) while awaiting test results.

Kathleen (Director of HR for Bowers) spent several hours with Keith today. He was awake and smiling. The uncertainties are difficult to deal with, but we continue to have faith that God will continue to work in healing Keith as well as in the lives of all those that surround Keith. Please pray for healing and that the family may continue to find strength during this difficult time.

Thursday - May 14th

Not a whole lot to report at this time. Keith is talking and progressing. Jenny sent me a text message last night and continues to be by Keith’s side as well as Keith’s mom and brothers. Breathing on his own, walking and talking are all good things to report up to this point. The rehab process will be long and we look for continued progress.

Update- Just after Keith's Birthday

Happy 35^th birthday Keith! We look forward to your next birthday when you will be out of the hospital and fully recovered.

On Monday, Keith had a CT Scan and EEG. There is still a bit of swelling, and Keith had a seizure the night before. His seizure meds were increased. Keith was a little out of it today and still in need of much rest. Please keep Keith in your prayers!

Mothers Day

First, Happy Mothers Day to all the mothers out there that are following this blog. I know Wendy is blessed to have three great sons this mother’s day and I am sure she is thankful for Keith’s recovery.

I heard from Jenny today who said Keith’s spirits are up but he is tired. A Dodger fan, maybe no one has told him about Manny yet!

I know there was talk about removing his trach which may occur this week. Keith makes progress each day and I am sure the week will be filled with new tests and therapy for Keith. Please pray for progress throughout the week. Tomorrow is Keith’s 35^th birthday. The real birthday celebration will happen when Keith is released from the hospital.

Fri, May 8th- Day 22...WOW!!!

Praise God for the positive things I got to see in Keith today. Keith was able to walk around today before I arrived. They removed staples from his head today and he was fitted with a helmet. With a small piece of his skull removed and preserved to make sure there is not pressure on his brain, it is important to make sure Keith does not injure himself further. While swelling has gone down, there is still a little swelling that needs to go down. Once that occurs, they will be able to reattach the piece of skull.

When I asked Keith who I was, he reached for my hand and while squeezing said “Paul”. I pointed to Danny and asked if he knew who HE was. It took him a second, but then he smiled and then described Danny as “a pain” in the rear end (but Keith didn’t say “rear end”). He has a sense of humor. I asked if he remembered Brian and Ray, and he responded with “Definitely”. I said “How could you not remember those characters” at which time Keith smiled. Leaving the room brought tears to my eyes as well as Danny. Nearly 22-days earlier we were told that he may not make it through the night. The recovery has been remarkable and it really gave me a warm and elated feeling to see him smile and talk. He was definitely tired and seemed confused at times. Imagine the full year it sometimes takes professional athletes to rehabilitate from a serious sports injury. Keith had a serious brain injury and it will take time to heal. He is making tremendous progress though and has been off the ventilator for two days.

I was pulled aside today by one of our EMTs that Keith hired. She talked about Keith saying “That was me”. She had a brain injury similar to Keith’s, but more severe with a skull fracture in addition to the subdural hematoma. Through a long healing and rehabilitation process, she works today on an ambulance for us and only lost her ability to smell from the injury.

While visiting, both Jason and Darren were also at the hospital. I am sure the close proximity to their homes has helped. Keith’s mom Wendy had a bit of a cold the last few days and of course didn’t want to spread that cold to Keith. She was back to work today and knowing Wendy, she was by Keith’s side tonight. I am sure she has put more miles on her car in the last 3-weeks than in the last 3-months. With the exception of her cold, she has been by Keith’s side. Jenny was also at work today, but thank God work and home are close to the hospital making visits much easier vs. having to commute to Long Beach.

I am sure this has been very trying for family and everyone else involved. As we continue to pray for Keith and thank God for his healing, please remember to pray for family that God will give them strength and traveling mercies as they travel to and from the hospital to see Keith.

Thursday Update - PROGRESS

Today was a fairly good day for Keith. Although Keith continues to be confused, he was able to take a few big steps forward. Keith sat up today and they actually stood him up as well. Physical Therapists (two of them) both are encouraged by his progress. He was able to lift, move and control his head. This is good. I received emails from Darren today and he says he is doing much better now that Keith is awake. Mom continues to be by his side each evening along with Jenny. I am sure it has been tough for both of them having to return to work this week, but we are thankful that they are close by now vs. having to drive to Long Beach.

Danny and I are visiting Keith tomorrow and I will update you again in the evening. Keith is strong and we continue to be thankful for what God is doing for Keith.

As Darren has already stated your accident has been the most difficult situation our family has ever faced. It has been two weeks of praying that you would wake up and return to us. Keith you have shown everyone that you are very strong, "A Mac Lellan" that’s for sure. I am very proud of you and I love you very much. There have been hundreds of people praying for you and our family which has made all of the difference in your recovery. Keith I hope you and all of the people that have been touched by your story will grow closer to God. Remember God is in control and he loves to come through for the people who love him.

Wednesday Update

Keith has been in his new facility for a day now.  Understandably, Keith has been a bit agitated.  He is still on a medication and gets confused at times.  A brain injury takes time to heal and we must accept that being patient through this process is a must.
 
Today a CT scan was planned but he was being a bit aggressive and was not cooperating with staff (Keith being feisty and not wanting to be where he is at).  As such, they let Keith rest and planned on doing a scan later today.  Keith was active and talking, but the injury has not completely healed and was described today as being “in and out of awareness”. 
 
On good note, his respiratory therapist came in this afternoon and said that he is doing very well. He is breathing on his own and his blood pressure is good.  They plan on adjusting his trach with a tube or cap that allows him to speak.  He spoke quite a bit today the best he could with his voice and not just mouthing.  The RT also said that Keith’s doctor is one of the best especially for these kinds of cases.  If Keith is progressing, the doctor will remove the trach as early as this weekend so that Keith can communicate better. 
 
In addition to Jenny,  Keith’s mother Wendy as well as his brothers Jason and Darren continues to be by  his side.  The entire family has been thankful for Keith’s  progress.
 
Thank God for the healing that has already occurred.  Please continue to pray for Keith.

Transport to Kindred West Covina

Keith was successfully transported to Kindred West Covina today. We wanted to make sure got the best care possible. We had our Management and Supervisor team complete the transport with RN Lead Rick Kaplan, Respiratory Therapist Sam Newman, Safety Manager Randy Marshman and driving was Marketing Coordinator/EMT Jonathan Harper. Operations Supervisor Pedro Flores and Operations Manager Danny Santillan assisted in the movement of Keith and followed to assist in placing him comfortably in his bed. Our staff took the time to meet with the facility Administrator, Nursing Staff and Respiratory Therapist to share who Keith is to all of us. He is in good hands.

The staff involved in the transport said it was one of the hardest things they have ever done. Many have not seen Keith since the accident. Just over two weeks ago we were all laughing with Keith.

Danny and I recalled the day before his accident when we went to Curley’s Restaurant after getting set up for the Grand Prix. Keith had been on quite the health kick for the last few months and had lost weight. As Keith relaxed for what he knew would be a weekend of unhealthy eating, Danny and I gave each other a high five and said “Keith is back” as he chowed down a sandwich, fries and a taquito. We look forward to a “high five” when Keith is back and we are able to sit down and have a meal with him again…soon!

Keith is in good hands. Please pray for his family and for continued healing. Keep Keith, Jenny and the family in your prayers!

We are scheduled to transport Keith at 1200 today. We are sending a team of managers and medical professionals to complete this transport. We will update you once the transport is complete and Keith is settled in West Covina.

Evening Update- Monday, May 4th

We will likely be moving Keith tomorrow, Cinco de Mayo! It is a day to celebrate the next step in Keith’s recovery. Plans are being finalized to move him to Kindred Hospital West Covina. From there he will subsequently be moved to a rehabilitation facility. There is a LONG ROAD ahead of Keith and we look forward to assisting in any way we can in the rehabilitation process.

Today one of staff members (Jonathan) went to see Keith and commented to him that he thought Keith was more of the type to wear his hospital gown with the opening in the front and not the back. This gave Keith a laugh and to know and see Keith laugh is truly a blessing. He knows who people are and is able to mouth words. When Andrea asked if he remembered who she was, he mouthed “Of course I remember you”.

WE thank God for continued healing and look forward to the next steps of Keith’s recovery. I will update you tomorrow once we have moved him by ambulance to West Covina. A group of Managers from Bowers Ambulance will personally handle the transport of a boss for many of our employees, an outstanding member of our management team, our loved colleague and our wonderful friend.

Today we worked with Case Management staff on planning the transport for Keith to Kindred West Covina today or tomorrow. We are working out details and will update you later this evening on Keith’s progress and his pending transfer.

SUNDAY NIGHT- DAY 16

Today was Orange County Marathon Day. We provided nearly sixty (60) EMT’s, Managers and Supervisors for First Aid and Ambulance coverage for the 26-mile stretch from 0445 this a.m. until the early afternoon. Missing at our briefing at 0445 was Keith who I am sure was sound asleep. Keith was definitely in our prayers and in our discussions about how he was supposed to be with us this morning, how much we miss him, and how he is not going to miss the next assignment we have that starts before the sun comes up.

Keith is doing remarkable. Previously hesitant in seeing daddy with tubes throughout and not able to open his eyes, Maddy has spent a great weekend with Daddy. At 10-years old and with little ones of my own that has played with Maddy in the past and are her age, we can all only imagine how tough it has been for Maddy. But this weekend was a weekend of smiles and “I love you” being shared back and forth! Today Maddy said “I love you” to Keith and he mouthed back “I love you more”. Maddy then mouthed back “I love you to infinity” at which point Keith mouthed “YOU WIN”.

Let’s talk more about WINNING! Yes, Keith is winning this battle and has beaten the initial odds. He is responsive and anxious to get out of bed. His ventilator is only doing about 30% of the work for him and plans are to continue to wean him down even more. As he continues to heal, plans are already in motion to get him transported to Kindred Hospital West Covina where he will continue his rehabilitation.

Many who know God but have not had much of a personal relationship with God used this difficult time to call on God for his miraculous healing. Keep that relationship alive! Like family and friends that we may seek for help, they should never be forgotten…especially when they come through. God is coming through! Take time if you haven’t to really thank him.

A time like this puts everything into perspective for all of us. It has for me. Thank you all for your faith and continued support to the MacLellan Family, Friends, and the Bowers Family. I look forward to continuing to provide you with good news.

Keeeeeeiiiiiiiffffff! Fasha! Mr. Incredible! White Chocolate! You have so many nick names because you're so such a great guy! What can I say Kieth you are my best guy friend, a Fasha figure and a pain in the rear big brother (even though I already have one of those). To date, his has been the longest 2 weeks of my entire life. You know, you hear stories like this where there are people who talk about friends or loved ones who have suffered an accident and there's all this trauma and emotional upheaval, but I never expected I'd be one of the people talking about this. I'm not going to get into the details of recalling the events of that day; they are burned in my brain forever. Instead I want to remember the Man who has earned those nicknames I mentioned above; especially Mr. Incredible. The injury you endured was quite severe and hearing your Neuro-Surgeon tell us that his main concern was keeping you alive was sureal. It actually took me a couple of days to realize that he actually said those words. But lets get back to how I remember you. I have been living with you and Jenny on and off for the past 3 years. You guys have been there for me in the toughest times of my personal life and I can never thank you enough. Jenny has been my best friend for well over 15 years. I'll never forget my first impression of you when you threw Jenny her 25th birthday party at Bryant's apartment. You were so cute in getting it right for her. I will never forget that day (because my boyfriend spent most of the night reading that dang whale book...LOL!) but mostly because you were so excited to make sure it was a surprise for Jenny; you wanted everything perfect for her! Right then I knew you were in love with her and that she had a great Man by her side. Keith, you are the Love of her life and ALL she thinks about. I like to think that we are not just friends, but family. The times we have spent together in the last 2 years have been so memorable. From going out to "The Hundy" and having a few drinks to spending nights at home watching "House" or "Grey's" and even to watching "The Deadliest Catch" (one of your favorite shows); we were family! You and Jenny have been incredible to me over the past few of years; you took me in as a "daughter". So being able to be there for Jenny these past 2 weeks has been an honor and a blessing. We have so much to tell you when you're 100% awake. Although these have been the longest 2 weeks of our lives; your progress in ONLY 2 weeks is nothing short of a miracle. You know I'm not the most religious person out there, but boy was I praying for you! Seeing you open your eyes on Thursday and moving around being a tough guy, trying to get up out of bed, reassured me that you truly are Mr. Incredible! I know you are wanting to get the heck out of bed....but just be patient Fasha, all in due time. You are going to be just fine! Wow, today you were truly incredible. You were trying to talk, you seemed to recognize us all and you were remembering things. You were asking for Maddy and asking Jenny for besitos. Words can't describe how eladed we are and so THANKFUL that God heard our prayers. We continue to pray for your FULL recovery. I know you can do it, Keith. Love You!!!

SATURDAY NIGHT UPDATE

EACH DAY KEEPS GETTING BETTER! Keith was moved out of ICU today and up the 7^th floor. Today when Jenny told him she loved him, he mouthed “I love you too”. He asked for his 10-year old Maddy as well. When she entered the room, he smiled and mouthed “I love you”.

We are seeing wonderful things in Keith’s recovery. God has heard your prayers and Keith will need continued prayers to get through this recovery period. I look forward to reporting more EXCELLENT NEWS in the days to come!

May 1 Update

It’s been two weeks since the injury. Jenny recalled hearing in the first few hours of the injury that Keith may not make it, to what is now clearly GOD at work. Keith is on the road to recovery. Again, the road will be long and we will need to take one day at a time, but things are going in the right direction.

Today Keith got agitated while be moved and tried to speak and was obviously mouthing words. When the RN asked Keith where he was, he mouthed “hospital”. He then kept mouthing that he had to go to the bathroom. He has a trach and is still on a vent, but being able to mouth words means that things are looking good and his brain is working to know where he is and what he wants.

We have done a lot of praying for Keith’s healing. Please take a moment to thank God for touching Keith and for his miraculous healing. Keep your fingers crossed, keep the prayers going and we will continue to keep you updated!

April 30 Update

AMEN!!!!!

Today wasn’t a good day, it was a GREAT DAY! With his sedation turned off, Keith has been able to open his eyes and is off the sedation. Jenny had been frustrated that Keith would open his eyes for his mom and medical personnel, but not Jenny. WELL today, his eyes were open and appeared that he was trying to talk. Remember, he still has a trach with a ventilator in place. Jenny asked Keith for a besito (kiss in Spanish) and he puckered up his lips. Jenny gave him a kiss and then he tried to smile. IN the text from Andrea explaining this occurrence, Andrea texted: GOD IS GOOD!

The progress is incredible in Keith. Tonight I went into his room and called out his name. Keith opened his eyes and turned in my direction and looked at me. One leg was off the bed has he had just previously tried to get out of bed. I asked him to move his fingers and he did. I asked him to squeeze his hand and he did. It was GREAT to see Keith with his eyes open. I hadn’t seen his eyes opened since the day of the accident, Friday the 17^th. It was tough to not get a tear in my eye over the joy of seeing Keith respond. I talked with him quite a bit and explained that he hit his head, had some bleeding, and that he had been sedated but is recovering well. I told him that he is recovering nicely and the doctors are encouraged by his progress. I imagined myself lying there, unable to speak and waking up (especially as a medical professional) wondering “what is going on and why am I here?” Keith’s mom, his brothers and Jenny have all been telling him what is going on. It is important to remind him that he has taken HUGE steps in his recovery. I know he wants out of that bed, but I also know that there is a long recovery period as well. But today was GREAT! GOD IS GOOD!

Continue to pray for Keith. He won’t likely be transferred for another week or so. Since he is recovering nicely, they may be moving him out of ICU soon.

April 29 Update

With the lack of movement, Keith was given a blood transfusion today. There isn’t any bleeding, but his white blood cells count was a bit off. He looked good today and tried to open his eyes for Jenny. With the sedation down, Keith tried to get out of bed and pull tubes. He definitely wants up and out! The doctors say that he is aware of his surroundings. Plans are being made for Keith to continue his recovery in an Acute Rehab Center closer to his home and family in the San Gabriel Valley. Transportation could occur as soon as Friday.

We will keep you updated on any changes.

April 28 Update

Pretty calm day today. A group of us (Paul, Nino, Danny, Ken and Andrea) had to go and try one of Keith’s favorite places to eat: Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles. Not bad! Okay, back to Keith…Pretty calm day today. Keith was put on a new type of breathing device called a T-BAR which is better for him. He was breathing on his own today and while Jenny was talking to him he was trying to open his eyes and managed to get one open. Still heavily sedated, we are taking this one day at a time.

Evening update

It was good to see Jenny and family in good spirits today. Jenny looked good and rested.

Today Keith was taken off the ventilator for 7-hours while breathing on his own. This is another good step. While getting a CT scan today, Keith was able to open both eyes and follow a moving finger. Another good step! Jenny is encouraged and said herself that she knows that this is going to take time.

While I was in the room with Jenny and Wendy tonight, Keith’s medical team came in and explained that the reason his temperature had been slightly elevated was because they were able to isolate where they think the infection might be (remember, lots of tubes and intrusion to his body and infection is not uncommon and is treated with antibiotics). Keith has a clot in his arm near his pic line. Usually treated with blood thinners, this is not possible in Keith’s circumstance since he has a brain injury. They plan on replacing the piece of his skull soon and are not in a position to give him the medication (Heparin) that would thin his blood. Once the pic line is removed, the clot will eventually dissipate. In the meantime, they will insert a filter to prevent the clot from traveling to Keith’s lungs. Clots are fairly common and they have a remedy to get this one under control and to get the infection to go away. They will place a central line (via the groin) in Keith that gives medical personnel necessary access (like an I.V. would) to give medications as needed.

We joked about Keith’s haircut a bit since they removed his bandages and Jenny has never seen Keith without all of his hair. He actually looks good and we commented on how 80% of his head is shaved, yet above his left ear he has his regular patch of hair.

Keith’s mom Wendy was very encouraged as well. Wendy told me tonight that she is worrying less and trusting God more. Today was a good day. Baby steps, one day at a time. Jenny said today that she knows it will take time.

I talked to Keith’s mother Wendy early this a.m. While Wendy sat with Keith talking about the Lakers and how they are doing in the playoffs (It’s a good thing it isn’t football season yet because Keith would be REALLY depressed to hear about how the Raiders would be doing), he was off the ventilator for 3-hours breathing on his own. He was able to open an eye which was exciting for mom to see. Remember, it’s still early and we are taking things one step at a time.

Family and friends celebrated Jenny’s birthday at the Yardhouse yesterday. Cake and all, it was tough for Jenny not having Keith present. Jenny said she did enjoy herself and we all know that this is what Keith would have wanted. Andrea (Keith and Jenny’s roommate and amazing friend) has been a rock for Jenny and spends each evening with her. Keith’s daughter Maddy brings smiles to the waiting room and is holding up well. Keith’s mother and brothers have continued to show amazing faith through these tough circumstances. Continue to pray for their strength in addition to praying for Keith’s healing.

Last week the Neurosurgeon said that it could be up to 6-months for the first steps of Keith’s recovery and maybe 18-months after that for a full recovery. Although tough to hear, Keith has and continues to make progress. While many think that Keith will be on his feet next week, we must “trust” and “be still” and know that God is working. Although we want results NOW from this storm we have been in for the last 9-days, we need to trust God. Part of a song sang in church today made me think of the circumstances Keith and family are going through:

Find rest my soul in Christ alone,
Know his power, in quietness and trust.

When the oceans rise
and thunders roar.
I will soar with You, above the storm
Father You are king over the flood,
I will be still and know You are God.

This song tells us that through these perilous circumstances we need to trust God. We must continue to be patient and have faith that Keith will continue to make progress. Faith has brought us through a rough 9-days with good news along the way!

TODAY, God brought MORE GOOD NEWS! From all the waiting, trust and faith we have all been a part of, Keith took a huge step today. Keith was taken off his ventilator for an hour and was able to breathe on his own during that time. This is another good sign in Keith’s recovery. We look forward to continued progress this week.

No real news today as of yet. Keith is resting quietly. It may be a day or two before tests can be performed once the sedation is low enough. As hard as it is to celebrate, today is Jenny’s birthday. We wish Jenny the best tor today and we hope that dinner plans that Keith made for tonight (Yardhouse) for Jenny will still happen with family and friends.

The first gift card was presented to Jenny from the Bowers Billing Department. Please send your gift cards to Bowers Ambulance, Attn: HR –Keith MacLellan. We will make sure they are delivered to Jenny as they arrive.

Update sent to me from Andrea: Today started out sad for Jenny not knowing if or how Keith would respond. WELL, after reducing the sedation, Keith tried getting out of bed and reached up to touch Jenny (don’t ask me where). It may be a day or two or even longer before he opens his eyes, but he is starting to respond now. Please continue to pray for good news.

A week has gone by and all we can do is to wait and see. The unknowns and “what ifs” have hit all of us, primarily Jenny and family. Waiting is very difficult, but that is all we can do for now: wait and pray.

Nothing significant today. They are reducing the sedation on Keith, but said it could be a few days for him to open his eyes. Nothing is happening fast enough for any of us, but we need to allow medicine and time to do their things. Family reports that Keith is resting nicely and I will know the minute he is able to respond as the sedation wears down. We will give you an update as things change or new information becomes available.

April 23 Update

Here we are, day 6. Keith had a very busy day today. Keith had an EEG, received his scheduled trach (to breathe through his throat without tubes running through his mouth), and also received a g-tube so he can begin to receive liquid nutrients. Although we are all hoping for Keith to jump out of bed and ask for a Cheeseburger, we understand that the journey is going to be long. While we remain hopeful, the outcome is still in God’s hands. We can only wait and see what kind of damage may or may not exist and pray for the best. We know Keith is a fighter.

Today the Neurosurgeon asked Keith to move and he did. He then asked Keith to raise his fingers. Heavily sedated, Keith slightly moved his fingers and then lifted three fingers. It appears that he is definitely listening and able to follow simple commands. This is good news. As each day and each week passes, there will be a series of tests to determine what Keith is able to do.

Jenny and family were visited today by a friend who sustained a serious brain injury and was in a coma for 40-days. Today this friend walks and talks like the rest of us. Each injury is different and it is too soon to tell (“too soon to tell” is what the medical professionals keep telling us) what the extent of Keith’s recovery will be.

In our leadership meeting today at Bowers Ambulance we discussed our desire to help Jenny and Keith through the rehabilitation process. This may be long and grueling, but like you that continue to wait for updates on this blog, we are committed to helping in every way possible with Keith’s rehabilitation.

Jenny did receive a bit of good news today when her mother in Florida was released from the hospital. Thank God for good news! Today I received a call from a vendor (Jerry from EVG) stating that he had connections with groups that are praying for Keith in other countries. We know that Keith has made through the critical first 72-hours because of your prayers. Please continue to pray for Keith’s recovery and for continued strength for the family.

April 22 Update

Although we all want things to progress quickly, it has become clearer that this is going to be a day by day process. We expect Keith to exceed expectations and that he will heal quicker than anticipated.

Keith continues to make progress. He is scheduled to get his trach and g-tube tomorrow. Both are key to his recovery. I got the following text from Jenny's close friend and roommate Andrea: "Just saw Keith with Jenny...man does she get him excited! His heart rate went from 58 to 81 AND he squeezed her hand when she asked him to". This is great news. Keith is able to follow commands which is a good indicator that things are going in the right direction! We are thankful for the good news we continue to receive.

Nino gave Jenny her laptop and air card today so she can check her emails and Keith's blog on a regular basis. Jenny liked the idea of the gift cards as there are typically up to 10 family member and friends at the hospital throughout the day and they are often going out to eat.

We pray that God continues to touch Keith and have faith that He is in control of this circumstance.

Meeting with Neurosurgeon

Up to this point, the progression continues to be positive and encouraging for Keith. I (Paul) accompanied Keith’s wife Jenny as well as Wendy and Darren (Keith’s mother and brother) to meet with Keith’s Neurosurgeon at about 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Neurosurgeon covered CT Scan results and prognosis possibilities. Although most of what were heard was good, the Doctor also had to discuss other possibilities to include what kind of damage MAY have occurred with the injury as well as the possibility that recovery could take well over a year. But the key and encouraging information we received are:

1. Keith is young which is in his favor

2. Keith no longer requires draining from his brain injury

3. He recognizes pain and discomfort which is an EXCELLENT sign

4. His vital signs are good

5. Swelling is nearly if not “gone” and the brain stem looks excellent

6. It is still REAL early and that this kind of injury takes time

The Doctor reiterated that it is too soon to tell a whole lot of things. Like breaking your leg, injuries take time to heal. Patience and time to heal are important for us all to remember. Having overcome the initial hurdles, the next hurdle or test will be to get Keith to answer specific commands to show he understands, such as: raising two fingers when asked. Oh yeah, the other good news is that when sedation was reduced, an RN had to get on top of Keith to restrain him because he began to swing his arms and reach for tubes that are clearly annoying him. Moving and the ability to recognize the things that are bothering him are excellent signs. In order to accomplish testing (responding to specific commands), the ventilator and tubing may need to be replaced with a simple and temporary tracheotomy to accommodate breathing. Medical staff indicates this is a good sign when they are able to move to this step.

We all acknowledged that this could be a long journey, but family and friends all agreed that Keith is too big, too strong and too determined to drag his recovery out. We are all confident that he will beat any timeframe given for each step of his recovery.

Tonight we talked about the importance of family and friends, and situations like this really put things into perspective. Petty differences really shouldn’t matter anymore in a time like this. Keith’s mom and his brothers have been amazing rocks for Jenny. Their faith is strong and they are all confident that Keith will pull through. Each day is another day to recovering. Maddy has visited after school and homework and has been upbeat while looking forward to getting dad home soon.

If you would like to communicate with Jenny outside of getting updates from this blog, she has stated that she prefers to respond to text messages at this time. The entire family has been watching your comments on the blog and they know that we are all praying and that God is in control here.

We know you are all on pins and needles waiting for this update. Here is what we know so far.

First, Jenny got news today that her mom in Florida was in the hospital with a respiratory illness. The good news is that mom is doing great! We know God is only giving Jenny what she can handle up to this point, but we all pray that Jenny only receives great news from this point forward.

Keith is slowly getting weaned off of his sedation. He is still heavily medicated and not awake. Today, the nurse got Jenny and told her she had to come with her to Keith’s room to see something. The nurse told Keith to raise his left foot. Keith did not respond. The nurse then said “Your wife is here, raise your left foot”. With out hesitation, Keith then moved his left foot (I wonder who really wears the pants in their house? With Jenny in the room, Keith listens!). This is spectacular news as he is making progress. As with most injuries, healing takes time. Keith is progressing well and we are all thankful for this progression.

Jenny has obviously been inundated with calls and we are sure it is difficult to repeat his progress with each call she receives. As such, we are providing Jenny with a laptop to keep up on responses you make on Keith’s blog while keeping each of you informed during this very busy time for Jenny and family. She is resting as much as anyone could possibly rest under these circumstances.

Many of you have asked “HOW CAN I HELP?” We have received some excellent suggestions that we are going to share with you. Jenny as well as the entire family (Keith’s mother, brothers, daughter, family, loved ones, closest friends) are eating out in and around the hospital Keith is staying at, St. Mary’s Medical Center in Long Beach. We figure eating out as well as the fuel costs to travel back and forth from San Bernardino County quickly adds up. As such, we are recommending that gift cards are provided for restaurants or for fuel stations. Area restaurants include:

April 20 Update

Keith has made progress since yesterday. His CT Scan today revealed that swelling was down and his ICP (Intra Cranial Pressure) number was 11. Anything below 15 is normal and good. The brain stem looked good and the Neurosurgeon was encouraged by his progress. Keith has been able to move his hands upon command and his improvements are allowing the hospital to move him from the “one-on-one” ICU unit to a lower ICU. Original plans to wean Keith off his ventilator on Friday have changed due to his progression and rapid improvement. The last word was that they would begin weaning Keith off the ventilator today instead. Thank God for good news!

Keith is a fighter and we continue to pray for continued wisdom for the wonderful medical staff, healing for Keith, and strength for his family. Keith’s wife “Jenny” is staying close in a nearby hotel supported by family and friends. This blog will help ease the many phone calls and text messages that are nearly impossible for Jenny to keep up with. There are many people who love Keith and are looking to give support and encouragement while staying up to date on Keith’s progress.

We promise to keep this blog updated as often as possible.

Keith went to have a brain CAT scan, the results were positive. He responded to all of the commands, i.e. raise your hand and move your toes. The swelling had subsided further. Ray, Paul, our EMTs, Paramedics and RNs who were working on the race all gathered outside the hospital join hands in a prayer. Keith's mother (Wendy) and brothers (Darren and Jason) were embraced individually by our employees.

My name is Nino. I work with Keith (Operations Manager and Paramedic Coordinator for Bowers Ambulance,) and I would like to share his story.

Friday, April 17 Keith and I were at the Long Beach Grand Prix. He was very excited because not only was it the day of the race, it also happened to be my birthday! He talked about how we were going to celebrate it that night, we were both very excited. Keith was talking about how he was look ing forward to having steak dinner.

3:30 pm that day, I left the race to pick up my daughter. Everything was looking good; perfect for a great day. Then at 8:00 pm my friend and co-worker, Danny who was with Keith at the time, called me. He said, "Bad news, brother. Keith is in the emergency room. He fell from a golf cart." I thought it was a joke and begun to get angry at him, telling him that it was not funny or something to joke about.

Learning that he wasn't joking, I was taken aback. He had also told me that he was unconscious, was bleeding from the brain, and things weren't looking good. Paul (VP of Bowers Ambulance) was first to get the horrifying news from the E.R. doctor that things did not look good! First assumption and call to Jenny, Keith's wife, was that he had a broken nose. As Brian And Ray (owners of Bowers,) co-workers, friends and families all gathered, our hearts all began to break as we learned things were more serious than a broken nose. I rushed to the emergency room, with all kinds of horrible thoughts in my head. Between prayer and fear, on my way to the hospital, I was horrified.

Once i had arrived, Keith's family and co-workers and friends were already there in tears. They told me what had transpired and that he would be receiving an emergency operation, and worry was written all over their faces. I waited outside, until they let us into the surgery waiting room. The brain swelling was so bad that they had to open up his skull to relieve the pressure.

Then all we could do was wait, it seemed like the longest three hours of my life.

Afterwords, they had informed us that we could see Keith once he was settled in the ICU. The operation was successful and the pressure was relieved. His brain had responded to the procedure and the swelling had subsided.
